Federation members stories: Jonny Gilbert

What it means to go fishing to some people? Here are a few federation members stories and experience of the sheer enjoyment and fun you can have with fishing and joining our federation. This account is from a senior member of ours Jonny Gilbert a man that loves all round sea fishing and is a man that always has his lad with him, sometimes forsaking a podium place for the sake a teaching the youngster how to match fish. A rare commodity in angling these days.

Started fishing at the tender age of 4 with my grandad and dad but wasn't until my early teens I really got big into it and joined my local club. Through my club I learned so much about fishing and had the privilege to represent Ulster at under 16, 21 and senior levels at some of the biggest competitions like interpros, home nations and world's. Moved away from match fishing to focus on my favourite side of sea angling and that's specimen hunting. There's nothing quite like hooking into a steam train of a Pollock or a beast of a Conger eel or even watching a bluefin tuna stripping line from a reel at high speed. Thanks to the NIFSA I've found my love for match fishing once again and as always at NIFSA matches there's always good crack. My grandad use to always tell me fishing is in my bloody and to be completely honest I couldn't agree more
